Description

The FN PS90 self-loading carbine with a barrel length of 16" equipped with a slotted recoil suppressor is a civilian alternative to the legendary PDW (Personal Defense Weapon) class machine gun, the FN P90.

The category of PDW weapons was already defined in the early 80s of the last century as part of the new NATO armament doctrine.
Through extensive research, it was found that the vast majority of members of the alliance armies are still armed with unnecessarily powerful, bulky and heavy weapons of the BR (Battle Rifle) category, without needing them at all.
The vast majority of armed military personnel are operators of equipment and weapon systems, logistics and other support - for example, in the US armed forces, combat infantry only make up roughly 10% of all armed personnel on the battlefield! Therefore, a requirement was defined for a completely new category of service weapons, the so-called personal defense weapon, which would fill the gap between pistols and submachine guns for pistol ammunition and standard assault rifles. The new category of weapons was rather defined by a new cartridge, as it was set with parameters that were really difficult to meet:

high penetration (the requirement was to penetrate 46 layers of Kevlar and a plate of 1.6 mm titanium at 200 m or the so-called CRISAT test, i.e. piercing the then standard protective helmet)
high accuracy
energy loss after 200m (reduction of the threatened area)
low weight
small dimensions
low recoil
the possibility of use in both a long gun and a pistol
Even if de facto no one has yet met the required parameters, i.e. certainly not completely, the given requirements resulted in a new cartridge from the Belgian arms and ammunition manufacturer Fabrique National de Herstal (FN): A 5.7 mm caliber cartridge in a 28 mm long cartridge chambered with an SS190 projectile, which is similar to the NATO standard bullet SS109 for the cartridge 5.56 x 45 mm.
Two weapons of the PDW concept were constructed for the said cartridge: the P90 submachine gun and the Five-seveN pistol. Especially when used together, this concept really makes sense, as the user has both a long weapon with a fully automatic function and an effective range of approx. 200 m, and a powerful pistol with a high capacity capable of overcoming ballistic protection.
The FN P90 soon became the object of interest of many armies and other armed forces, although the reason for the interest was often the completely new design.
After all, the futuristic look of the weapon made it famous in many sci-fi films and TV series, especially in the famous Stargate.
Unfortunately, the PDW concept as such was never put into practice, armies continue to prefer to keep non-combat components armed with standard assault rifles, as it is simply easier logistically.
However, the P90 and Five-seveN soon came into the sights of police forces and especially various special forces and anti-terrorist units, especially due to the increasingly frequent use of ballistic protection by criminals.
Today, FN P90 rifles/machine guns/PDW are in service in more than 50 countries around the world and their popularity is not decreasing.
Their futuristic appearance is not their only currency, it is especially the unprecedented capacity of 50 cartridges.
The cartridges are stored in the magazine transversely and during feeding they are rotated by 90° in two steps, as the magazine is stored in the bed on the upper side of the case along.
The overall dimensions of the weapon are therefore very compact despite the high capacity, which made the P90 a very popular weapon for the protection teams of high-ranking government officials or diplomats.
In the Czech Republic, the FN P90 has been in service with the elite police Rapid Deployment Unit since the mid-1990s.
The commercially available, self-loading variant of the FN PS90 stands out at first glance, especially with its long, 16" barrel.
Unfortunately, this is the tax for current American legislation. Otherwise - of course, apart from the absence of a fully automatic function - its civilian variant does not differ in any way from the "military" P90 and shares a significant number of components, including magazines.
